Lost and found

Why do we not build and run community lost and founds? They would be a great source for charity and there would not be the disparate systems of a community's transit system's one, the one at the police office, and objects held by people and then placed in an ad in the newspaper. It would work very well in a small to medium-sized town or village where it would not be too far out of a person's way to take an item there. In larger cities the coordination of getting the object there might be excessive, but maybe it could have an ad component as well, with people calling or better yet emailing or submitting the item description or location and everyone can know where it was lost. It could be a web-site to start with.
I did a little research, and it turns out the second part already exists in the form of at least two web-sites.
I am writing this because I lost some books on the way home last week and am very annoyed.
